How to Install Door Lock Covers on Your Jeep Wrangler JL (Step-by-Step Guide)

What You'll Need
Installing door lock covers on your Jeep Wrangler JL is one of the easiest upgrades you can make — no tools required, no drilling, no modifications. Here's what you'll need:
- A set of Door Lock Covers compatible with Jeep® Wrangler JL & JLU (2018–2024)
- A can of compressed air (optional but recommended)
- A clean microfiber cloth
That's it. The entire installation takes under five minutes.
Why Install Door Lock Covers on Your JL?
The Jeep Wrangler JL's door lock keyholes sit exposed on the exterior door panel, making them a direct entry point for trail dust, beach sand, mud, and rain. Over time, this debris works into the lock cylinder, causing corrosion and stiff operation. A quality set of keyhole covers eliminates this problem entirely by sealing the opening when the key isn't in use.
Beyond protection, they also give your doors a cleaner, more finished look — a small detail that makes a noticeable difference up close.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Step 1: Identify Your Keyholes
The Jeep Wrangler JL has keyholes on the driver's door and passenger door. If your JL has a tailgate lock, there's a third keyhole at the rear. Count your keyholes before you start so you know how many covers you need.
Tip: If you have a JL with a tailgate lock, check out our Keyhole Covers with Tailgate Lock Cap — it includes covers for all three openings.
Step 2: Clean the Keyhole Area
Before installing, give each keyhole a quick blast of compressed air to clear out any existing debris. Follow up by wiping the surrounding door panel with a clean microfiber cloth. This ensures the cover seats flush and stays in place.
Step 3: Align the Cover
Hold the keyhole cover up to the keyhole and align it so the opening on the cover lines up with the keyhole slot. The cover is designed to fit in one orientation — you'll feel it naturally align when positioned correctly.
Step 4: Press and Snap Into Place
Apply firm, even pressure to the cover and press it into the keyhole. You'll feel and hear a subtle click as the retention tabs engage. The cover should sit flush with the door panel with no rocking or gaps.
Step 5: Test the Fit
Give the cover a gentle tug to confirm it's seated securely. It should hold firmly in place. To remove it when you need your key, simply use your fingernail or a flat edge to pop it out from one side — it releases cleanly without scratching the door panel.
Step 6: Repeat for All Keyholes
Repeat Steps 3–5 for each remaining keyhole. On a standard JL two-door or four-door, you'll have two keyholes to cover (driver and passenger). On a JL with tailgate lock, add the rear keyhole as well.
Fitment Notes for Wrangler JL Owners
Not all door lock covers are created equal. Here's what to know about fitment for the JL platform:
- JL & JLU (2018–2024): Use our standard JL/JLU Keyhole Caps for the driver and passenger doors.
- JL with Tailgate Lock (2018–2025): Use our JL Tailgate Lock Cover set to cover all three keyholes.
- Jeep Gladiator (2018–2025): The Gladiator shares the JL door platform — our JL & Gladiator Keyhole Covers fit both models.
Note: JK covers (2007–2018) are not compatible with JL doors. Make sure you're ordering the correct generation for your Jeep.
Maintenance Tips After Installation
- Check fitment periodically — especially after hard trail runs. Vibration and impacts can occasionally loosen a cover.
- Clean under the covers every few months by removing them, blowing out the keyhole, and reinstalling.
- Replace if cracked or loose — a damaged cover provides less protection and can rattle.
